All Fred Astaire movies Yes, all of them, black and white, or Colors. Enjoy the dance legend. Movie stories similar sometime, but dances are different and very creative on every one of them.
Singin' in the Rain
(1952)

Director: Gene Kelly Stanley Donen
Starring: Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor

Gene Kelly made dancing seem virile and modern, and every sequence here is unforgettable, not just his wet classic in the street. Donald O'Connor is almost as good and twice as funny.

White Christmas
(1954)
Director: Michael Curtiz
Starring: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen
Thanks to Kathy Braden who sent in this movie information!!! Here is the quote from Kathy "There is a lot of dancing throughout the movie My favorite dance number comes about 30 minutes into the movie with Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen dancing outside at a Florida nightclub to the song The Best Things Happen While You are Dancing."
West Side Story
(1961)
Director: Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise
I love this movie when the song and dance are right. Some of the songs are pretty boring.
Saturday Night Fever (1977)
Director: John Badham
Starring: John Travolta
Ditto, but for the New York suburbs. Perhaps the only great film set in a disco. Travolta in tight pants made even walking look like dancing. This movie was rated R and still not a great movie for children.
Grease
(1978)
Director: Randal Kleiser
Starring: John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John
Enjoy it if you are as young as I am.
All That Jazz (1979)
Director: Bob Fosse
Starring: Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange
Broadway style movie rated R. Good Jazz dances but not too healthy story. BTW, if you are a smoker or were a smoker, you could feel what Roy felt when he smoked so heavily in this movie.
Flashdance
(1983)
Director: Adrian Lyne
Starring: Jennifer Beals, Michael Nouri

Enjoy it if you are my age.
Footloose
(1984)
Director: Herbert Ross
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer

Only remember it had good songs!

Gregory Hines and some of the best black hoofers from several generations show us some great dance moves.
Dance Theatre of Harlem (1989)
Starring: Dance Theatre of Harlem, Arthur Mitchell I haven't seen it.
My Blue Heaven
(1990)

Strictly Ballroom (1992)
Director:Baz Luhrmann

I like this Australian movie. Not logical but enjoyable.
Flamenco
(1997)
Director: Carlos Saura I haven't seen it.
The Tango Lesson
(1997)
Director:Sally Poter.
Starring: SAlly Potter, Pablo Veron, Carlos Copello.
British movie. The best ever Argentine Tango movie. Black and white, weird story. If you like Tango, you must buy it. I don't think there is a DVD version in US. Only VHS.
Shall We Dance
(1997)
Director: Masayuki Suo
Starring: koji Yakusho, Tamiyo Kusakari.
This is the origin and it is still the best! The story is logical and much better than the Richard Gere's 2004 version.
Mad About Mambo
(1998)
Director: John Forte
No Mambo but a little Samba. I meant 'a very little' Samba. Don't bother to watch this movie unless you always get turned on by teens' love stories like I do.
Dance With Me
(1998)
Director: Randa Haines
Starring: Vanessa Williams, Chayanne
I like it!
Tango
(1999)
Director: Carlos Saura
Starring: Cecilia Narova, Miquel Angel Sola
Good Tango movie.
Burn the Floor
(2000)
Starring: Burn the Floor, Fergus Login Not a movie. It is a film of a live show. Some top of the world ballroom dancers in it. Don't rent it, buy it! You want to watch this movie over and over again. Click to visit Burn the Floor wetsite.
Billy Elliot
(2000)
Director: Stephen Daldry

Not related to ballroom dances.
Great British movie with spirited freestyling by Jamie Bell. I love this movie.

You watch it, you forget it!
Fosse
(2002)

Director: Matthew Diamond
Starring: Ann Reinking, Ben Vereen

I haven't seen it.
Assassination Tango
(2002)
Director:Robert Duvall
Starring: Robert Duvall, Ruben Blades.
Boring Movie but very good Argentine Tango. You will not watch it twice. Maybe only fastward to the Tango dance parts.
Chicago
(2003)
Director: Rob Marshall
Starring: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger
Great Broadway show to the screen the 2nd time. You will enjoy it better in the theater due to the 'moods' that lady audiences create.
Dirty Dancing - Havana Nights (2004)
Director: Guy Ferland
Starring: Diego Luna, Romola Garai
Teen's movie. OK with me.
Shall We Dance? (2004)
Director: Peter Chelsom
Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale
Ballroom lovers would watch this movie and forget about the unreasonable portions! People just love Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon.
Mad Hot Ballroom
(2005)
Director: Marilyn Agrelo
A very interesting documentary movie about school kids taking ballroom competitions in New York City public schools.
Take the Lead
(2006)
Director: Liz Friedlander Antonio Banderas stars as a real life professional dancer who volunteered to teach in a New York City public high school.
Release on 4/7/2006.
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School
(2006)
Director: Randall Miller Released on 3/31/2006. Got almost all bad reviews. The DVD was released in August. It is grey movie with a sort of happy ending. Ballroom part is more abstract than real. The movie needed a dance consultant to satisfy viewers who know ballroom dances. I myself like the story and the way it was told. Directing was bad though.
Hairspray
(2007)
Director: Adam Shankman
Great Broadway movie! Not a sigle minute is boring! Don't miss it!
